# License Agreement
This license agreement, valid from the date of ... and passed between the following parties:
Mandriva SA (the owner and the owner of the trademark "Mandriva") and the licensee, the OpenMandriva Association, an association of law established in 1901 to 8114 Jadot, 8 Square Jean-Paul Sartre, 91000 Evry, founded on 8th December 2012.
The holder and owner of the brand "Mandriva", Mandriva SA, and by the same, the issuer of that license has all rights necessary and sufficient property to grant the source code and other items belonging to what is normally called "intellectual property" as described in detail in Appendix A at the end of this document. The issuer of the license grants OpenMandriva association this intellectual property in the terms and conditions described in this document to allow the Association OpenMandriva to continue the purpose for which it was created.
The Contracting Parties as defined by this license (Mandriva SA and OpenMandriva association) engage in the following terms:
1. Mandriva SA by this license gives the association OpenMandriva
a) a non-exclusive and irrevocable worldwide license, without any right to royalties ("royalty-free"), to reproduce, prepare, publicly display, publicly run, distribute, give sub-licenses within association and outside, and create derivative works of the software and derivative releases in the form of source code and binary code
b) a worldwide non-exclusive, without any right to payment of royalties ("royalty-free"), for private use, public, distribute, publicly display the name "Mandriva" only in conjunction with the name "Open" as the new brand name used by the association in OpenMandriva software products, published documents and public events is "Open Mandriva." Any use of the Mandriva brand alone without Open, or logos owned by Mandriva SA. is excluded from this license.

### Association
While referring to the Association, you must write "OpenMandriva" or "OpenMandriva Association" (without the quotation marks).
Please note it is a one word, no space between "Open" and "Mandriva".
Also allowed shortened as "OMA".
### Distribution
While referring to the distribution, you must write "OpenMandriva Lx".
Also allowed shortened as "OMLx". Please note the "L" uppercase and the "x" lowercase, no space between "M" and "L" (without the quotation marks).
A release number may be appended to the product name for better identifying the distribution. Therefore you can write as an example "OpenMandriva Lx 4.0" or "OMLx 4.0".
***Notes***:
Any use of the Mandriva brand alone without "Open" is not allowed.
Under no circumstances you will use "Mandriva" while referring to OpenMandriva Association or OpenMandriva products.<br>

# OpenMandriva Release Plan and Repositories
Before making any change regarding release or update channels if you are even a tiny bit unsure stop, do not do it, and ask for advice on our forum or Chat with OpenMandriva Team
## Release
A release is a group of software packages put together to form an operating system.
Each release is distinguished by its "version", like *Mandriva 2009*, W*indows XP*, *OpenMandriva Lx 2014*, *OpenMandriva Lx 4.0*, ect.
Releases are also called *Update Channels*.
Release, Rock, Rolling and Cooker are all different release versions/update channels of OpenMandriva Lx. The emphasis is on the word different.
**They must not be combined**.
## Repositories
Repositories are servers which contain sets of packages, literally .rpm files.
On OpenMandriva operating system software is packaged in .rpm files which contain the programs and libraries you need. These files can be downloaded and also some are included in .iso files as a specific "release version" for user installation.
Each OpenMandriva release version has its own repositories.
They are not interchangeable, **do not mix them**.
Users generally accesses these files with package management tools like [DNF](https://wiki.openmandriva.org/en/How_to_manage_software_with_DNF), or previously URPM.
There are GUI tools for this also like dnfdragora, Discover, and previously RpmDrake.
## Release Plan
The "Release Plan", also known as "Update Channels", is a hierarchy of software packages grouped together (release versions) in order to accomplish certain goals.
As an example Cooker release/update channel is designed specifically for developers to work on even it they break things.
Another example is Rock release/update channel which is designed for ordinary computer users to use for daily functions and is designed to not break (literally designed to be "stable").
With the Release of OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 OpenMandriva the distribution has implemented a new release plan in order to better organize the workflow for package maintenance and streamline and speed up the release process. This is closely coordinated with our repository structure.
On a given system use only one release. **Do not mix releases/update channels or package conflicts are likely if not guaranteed.**
Releases are also known as "Update Channels". Each version above has it's own repositories. The repository or .repo files are found in the directory `/etc/yum.repos.d`. By name the repository names are respectively openmandriva-cooker, openmandriva-rolling, openmandriva-rock, and openmandriva-release.
Repositories are further defined and named according to arch. Example below.
- **Cooker (Unstable)**
Cooker is the development branch. This is where developers do the actual work of developing packages and the distro itself. Because of the nature of this continual work process Cooker breaks at times. That is correct.
We aren't saying Cooker *might break* we say quite honestly Cooker *will break*.
If you are not used to problem solving on computers at a very high level Cooker is not for you.
- **Rolling**
Rolling release is still in development and not officially announced.
At present entire Rolling release is in testing stage and not yet ready for production use.
Rolling is where developers take packages when they believe they are ready for use.
Rolling is, as its name implies, a rolling release and will have the most up to date packages practical.
It is designed to be a working, usable system. Rolling users need to be able to handle some problem solving on their own as with any "bleeding edge" release. Also Rolling users should be familiar with and able to use the command line or terminal (Konsole) at times.
- **Rock (Stable)**
Rock repositories consist of a symbolic link to the latest stable version of OpenMandriva. Currently Rock is linked to OM Lx 4.0. However when OMLx 4.1 is released, Rock will automatically be switched to OM Lx 4.1.
- **Release (Stable)**
Release repositories are the latest stable versions of OpenMandriva Lx currently OM Lx 4.0 and 4.1. Release repositories stay with the same release. If you install OM Lx 4.0 and used Release repository instead of Rock you will stay with 4.0 repository.
The Release/Stable version would be the most stable and suitable for users that like things to stay as they are and just work. Package upgrades will be limited mostly to bug fixes, and security updates.
Keep in mind that any version will eventually reach EOL (End Of Life) and there will be no more updates of any kind.
And remember the following: On a given system use only one release.
**Do not mix release/update channels or package conflicts are likely if not guaranteed.**
The packaging workflow now is:
`Cooker/Unstable > Rolling > Release/Stable`
*Remember Rock is a symlink to Latest Stable Release.*
## List of Repository files
Using OM Lx x86\_64 example
*znver1 users will see znver1 instead of x86_64*
Each Release above has its own repositories. They are not interchangeable, do not mix them.
These are the repository files for OpenMandriva Lx x86\_64.
The i686 files are there only for the occasional install of 32-bit applications like Wine, Steam, or gaming apps.
It is recommended to enable them only for installing and upgrading those specific packages and otherwise to leave them disabled. Otherwise weird, baffling and unforeseen problems may occur.
Keep in mind that any developers still developing for 32-bit "only" are monumentally behind the times as far as technical progress in Linux.

Users do not normally use source.repo files, if you don't have a reason to use these leave them alone.
## Normally used repository files
To make this simpler the vast majority of x86_64 users will normally use **one only** of these four.
Repository files listed with most stable first/least stable last:

## Media Sources
With in each repository file listed above we have these four basic "Media" sources or categories:
- **main**
`/main` is the core packages maintained by the OpenMandriva Lx team. This includes anything included in the install images as well as many more applications considered important. /main/release repository should always be enabled. If your system is using Release or Rock repo file then /main/release/updates should also always be enabled.
- **unsupported**
`/unsupported` represents ''community maintained'' packages. These are not supported by the core OpenMandriva Lx team, and depend on package maintainers to update it. There are many packages in unsupported that will not install and others that install but do not work properly. Users are welcome to use whatever they find in this repository that is working.
- **restricted**
`/restricted` contains libraries that are not installed by default due to legal concerns such as patent issues.
The usage of these packages vary by country. OpenMandriva Lx is not responsible for their usage!
**If you believe that their usage is disallowed in your country, please disable the restricted repositories**.
- **non-free**
`/non-free` contains applications and drivers that are distributed, but do not meet the definitions of [Free Software](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Free_Software_Definition). While we can adjust the packaging of such applications, ''we do not have the source code and therefore can not fix problems caused by anything in this repository''.
## Explanation of what to enable in repository categories
You may enable any of the following with the Software Repository Selector (om-repo-picker) in the Application Launcher under System.

As a practical matter for any of the Release categories chosen one should enable the Main repository always. For Release (Stable) and Rock one would enable (using x86_64 system as example)

Whether to use any or all of Unsupported, Restricted, or Non-Free is user decision but if one chooses to do so one would also enable the /release and /updates for each.

Rolling and Cooker differ in that there is no update category for these so one would simply remove the /updates entries from the above list.
For a little more explanation for Release/Stable and Rock one would be enabling either 2, 4, 6, or a maximum of 8 media categories.
For Rolling or Cooker one would be enabling between 1 and a maximum of 4 media categories. This is in normal circumstances.

# Chwido

Chwido is the name of one developer's dog, a little ratter. Being unofficial mascot of OpenMandriva, he is active in our forum and in our discussion rooms. Technically he's divided into two bots.
## Chwido in discussion rooms.
Chwido is an IRC bot, but visible on both IRC channels and Matrix rooms. It's based on Sopel and can use all its commands. It has also some additional commands.
Here are the commands you can use:

# OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 Errata - Known Issues

## NVIDIA Graphics Cards
This release includes the reverse engineered nouveau driver, which gives moderately good support for most NVIDIA cards. For some dual-screen work it is actually better than NVIDIA binary driver as it supports screen rotation on a second monitor useful for monitors with rotatable screens.
Users may use drivers from nvidia web site but they are not supported by OpenMandriva. These can not be supported by OpenMandriva for a number of reasons.
Installing and maintaining any proprietary nVidia drivers is solely the users option and responsibility.
## NVME SSDs
There is a well known problem with some (especially newer) NVME SSDs and PCIE devices where the SSD may not be recognized. For our *Live* ISO there is a workaround described in [Release Notes](/en/releases/omlx41/omlx41_release_notes).
Problem is known and being worked on by OpenMandriva developers and upstream developers.
The OM Lx 4.1 release includes kernel 5.5.0 and hardware recognition for nvme SSDs should be considerably improved.
It is known that some Samsung nvme SSDs that were not previously recognized are now with this kernel version. This issue is of course very hardware specific.
On installed system user may wish to add that workaround to `/etc/default/grub` and run `update-grub2` to make workaround global. You would use the one that you found to work on the *Live* ISO.
If `(PCIE ASPM=OFF)` worked for you then add:
`pcie=aspm=off`
to the lines:
`GRUB_DECLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT`
`GRUB_DECLINE_LINUX_RECOVERY`
in
`/etc/default/grub`
and then run:
`$ sudo update-grub2`
If `(NVME APST=OFF)` worked then add instead:
`nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0`

Installer automatically GEOIP setting may not set the timezone correctly.
## How to configure printer
Turn your printer on and see if it is automatically configured. Pay attention to whether the right driver was installed. If printer was auto configured and you have correct driver then great, you are all set.
If it was not, turn off your printer. Open *Printer Settings* aka `system-config-printer` and remove your printer.
If the correct driver was not installed by default we will need to add a software package.
The next step is to determine what software to add for your printer.
In OpenMandriva Lx this is most likely to be a 'task-printing' package specific to your printer brand. The packages are:
- task-printing-canon
- task-printing-epson
- task-printing-hp
- task-printing-lexmark
- task-printing-okidata
- task-printing-misc
Install the package that matches your brand or the misc package if none do. Example using okidata:
`$ sudo dnf install task-printing-okidata`
Now turn printer on again and it should then automatically configure itself (sometimes you might need to reboot for auto config to work).

# OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 Release Notes
The OpenMandriva Lx teams are pleased to announce the availability of **OpenMandriva Lx 4.1**.
## Available Media
This release is available as a live media DVD or USB flash drive (memory stick), downloadable in ISO format. These are available on our [downloads page](https://www.openmandriva.org/en/documentation/openmandriva-lx/article/download-omlx-4-1). USB flash drive installation is usually noticeably faster. As always speed depends on many factors.
*Live media* means you are able to run OpenMandriva Lx straight from a DVD or memory stick (see below) and try it before installing it. You may also install the system to hard disk either from the running live image or from the boot manager.
Available ISO files are:
- [KDE Plasma](https://www.kde.org/plasma-desktop) desktop only full featured (includes the most common used functionalities, multimedia and office software).
- znver1 Plasma: we have also built a version specifically for current AMD processors (Ryzen, ThreadRipper, EPYC) that outperforms the generic (x86_64) version by taking advantage of new features in those processors.
znver1 is for the listed processors (Ryzen, ThreadRipper, EPYC) only, do not install on any other hardware.
## Recommended Hardware
OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 requires at least 2.0 GB of memory and at least 10 GB of hard drive space (see below for known issues with partitioning).
> Important Note: Graphics Hardware:
> The KDE Plasma Desktop requires a 3D graphics card that supports OpenGL 2.0 or above.
> We recommend using AMD, Intel, Adreno or VC4 graphics chips.

## Internet Connection
Calamares Installer checks if an Internet connection is available, but OpenMandriva Lx 4 will install just fine even without. It is perfectly OK to simply install as you normally would and proceed to use your new system as normal.
Updating such a system would require being temporarily connected to the internet or downloading the packages elsewhere and transferring them to the installed system and installing the updated packages. But as you are not connected to the internet you could simply use the system and not update for how ever long you see fit.
## Virtual Machines
At this time the only virtualization software that OMLx ISOs are tested on is VirtualBox. The same hardware requirements apply when running in virtual machines.
For VirtualBox however you must **always** have at least 2048 MB of memory or OpenMandriva Lx will fail to boot.
Also for VirtualBox it is advisable to install to a fresh virtual machine, as trying to install to an existing one may occasionally fail.
## Calamares installer
Calamares is an installer framework.
By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. It aims to be easy, usable, beautiful, pragmatic, inclusive and distribution-agnostic.
Calamares includes an advanced partitioning feature, with support for both manual and automated partitioning operations.
It is the first installer with an automated “Replace Partition” option, which makes it easy to reuse a partition over and over for distribution testing.
Many Linux distros use Calamares installer and each has it's own implementation and standards. The fact that something about OpenMandriva installer does not conform to user experience with another Linux distro does not mean this is a bug.
## Partitioning
At this time partitioning LVM and Raid setups with Calamares installer are NOT supported.
**This applies to all partitioning**, all installation on hardware: If you have a UEFI/EFI computer and your BIOS offers a choice when you boot installation media between for example:
`USB some Flash Drive`
`UEFI USB some Flash Drive`
or
`some DVD optical_device`
`UEFI some DVD optical_device`
You have to choose the UEFI option and boot that. But know also that not all computers will do this. Some with more spartan BIOS will offer only the one option and almost always it is the correct one. So for instance if on a notebook you don't see the above choice no worries.
If you have multiple storage drives enabled they all need to have the same partition table type. They either need to all be gpt or all mbr for everything to work properly.
On UEFI computers in multi-boot situation with multiple storage drives if you already have an existing `/boot/efi` partition you have to use that. The partitioner will not create another `/boot/efi` with proper flags and installation will result in error with no bootloader installed. Do not format you just set the mount point to `/boot/efi`. One can have many different boot loaders for different operating systems in the same `/boot/efi` partition. If there is any need to switch boot loaders that is done in BIOS settings.
## NVME SSDs
Some NVME SSDs may not be recognized by OMLx 4.1 *Live* ISO.
The *Live* ISO has 2 different workarounds for this under "Troubleshooting" in the Grub2 Menu. They are `(PCIE ASPM=OFF)` and `(NVME APST=OFF)`. We hope this works for most peoples hardware. Problem is known and being worked on by OpenMandriva developers and upstream developers. See more in [4.1/Errata#NVME SSDs](/en/releases/omlx41/omlx41_errata#nvme-ssds).
The OM Lx 4.1 release includes kernel 5.5.0 and hardware recognition for nvme SSDs should be considerably improved. It is known that some Samsung nvme SSDs that were not previously recognized are now with this kernel version. This issue is of course very hardware specific.
## Installer and EFI Support
This release of OpenMandriva Lx supports booting and installation with and without [UEFI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface).
Note that secure boot is NOT supported.
If you wish to perform an EFI installation on an existing MBR disk it will be necessary to convert the disk partition table to the newer GPT partitioning scheme. To do this you need to use the gdisk tool. A typical invocation would be `gdisk /dev/sda`: the existing partition table will be converted in memory to the GPT scheme. Warnings will be issued about potential data loss, the disk will not be altered until you write the partition table by pressing <kbd>w</kbd>. You are advised to back up any important data.
There may be occasions where the conversion cannot be performed, this will usually be due to insufficient space at the beginning or end of the disk to write the partition table. It may be necessary to delete or resize a partition to create the needed space, gparted is your friend in these circumstances.
There is still a need to create an efi partition to contain the boot equipment and this must be created while running the Calamares installer. When the installer reaches the partitioning stage the `/` (root) partition should be removed and a small (330 MB) FAT16 or FAT32 partition created at the start of the drive. If diskspace is critical then a smaller partition may be used, but be sure to set it as FAT16 or FAT32 in Calamares otherwise the installation will fail.
If you fail to observe these steps the installation of the boot loader will fail. Subsequently partition the disk in the normal way.
Please share your experiences on the forums so that we may improve this aspect of the installation.
If you are installing beside Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or similar EFI booted OS as a precaution please ensure that you have recovery disks and you have backed up any important data.
Our testing has been limited with this configuration, but successful installations have been performed with no issues.
We would welcome any feedback in this area.
## Changing Partition Type
Please note that Calamares cannot convert one partition type to another and preserve partition data.
If you run Calamares from the live image it is not possible to change an existing partition type. Trying to do this generates an error message.
In order to do this you must first delete the partition and recreate it as the type that you wish.
## Booting from USB
It is also possible to boot this release from an USB storage device. To transfer the live/installation image you may:
### - Use the ROSA Image Writer available from our repos
`sudo dnf --refresh install rosa-imagewriter`
Or, if you do not have OpenMandriva Lx yet, you can get ROSA Image Writer download links at [this page](http://wiki.rosalab.ru/en/index.php/ROSA_ImageWriter)
At least 4 GB of flash drive capacity is recommended. Persistent storage is not necessary. Note that this **will erase** everything on your USB!
> Please do not use other usb-writing tools as some Windows tools (e.g. Rufus) truncate the volume name. This breaks the boot process.

You may alternatively dd the image to your USB stick:
`$ sudo dd if=<iso_name> of=<usb_drive> bs=4M`
Replace `<iso_name>` with the path to the ISO and `<usb_drive>` with the device node of the USB drive, i.e. `/dev/sdb`.
SUSE Studio ImageWriter has also been tested and works for burning ISO images to USB storage device.

## About Repositories
We have now the [om-repo-picker](https://wiki.openmandriva.org/en/images/4/46/Repopicker-00.png) aka Software Repository Selector to select additional repositories for more package availability.
Do not mix the repositories from different release versions/update channels. This means, as an example, **do not use Cooker repositories on a Rock system**. If you use Rock, use Rock repositories only.
This is explained in more detail in [OpenMandriva Release Plan and Repositories](/en/doc/release_plan_and_repositories).
**If you mix different release/update channel repositories and you break your computer the solution is to do a fresh install.** And after that fresh install don't do this again.
## New Features and Major Changes
